I understand that feeling. Sometimes I feel like I "miss" Japan even though I've never been there. I think it has a lot more to do with what it represents for me than what it actually is, though. (for me, Japan reminds me of anime, anime reminds me of childhood and childhood friends)
I also get a "missing" feeling towards certain actors and actresses that I've obviously never met before, but again - more to do with what they represent than who they actually are.
