  • It started out as rubbing my finger along the edge of my sheets or pillow cases. I have been doing this my whole life. It did not become an issue for me until college. I began being embarrassed and started hiding it. As I rubbed the lace edge off of many sheets and pillowcases, I had to replace them often. If I traveled with the piece of rubbed-off lace I had to make extra sure I kept up with it. A few times I had to ask a hotel or friend's parents to mail the left-behind lace strand to me. Although I can sleep without it, it aids tremendously to falling asleep fast and to soothing me on stressful travels. My fingertips stay rather dry, likely from the friction. I have been diagnosed with mild, longterm depression and some OCD tendencies. I am currently on Lexapro, but the urge/need/desire to rub lace edges has not diminished. I recently convinced my father-in-law to "slip" me a new lace pillowcase- so I should be set for at least another year... I leave a piece behind somewhere. Yuck! It's gross! Germy, I am sure. Embarrassing, too! What do I tell my kids when they figure it out!?! I think I do some sort of tongue thrusting(/sucking) while I do this, too?.? Why is this so hard to research on line? I guess I was too embarrassed, or it just did not come up during previous therapy sessions?!

    • I too am part of this little gang. It's great to know there are others out there that have the same habit. Gotta love the internet. For the record, I prefer sheets to pillowcases. My family, wife and close friends know my 'secret'. They all think it's an extension of a childhood security blanket. I think that's patronising and incorrect. While it relaxes me, I don't think it's anything to do with my childhood. I just really like the feeling! The problem is I find it hard to stop. That's the bit that doesn't feel healthy. I was also concerned about my behaviour when I went travelling around Europe and tore off a strip of an old sheet to take with me. Passport. Check. Plane ticket. Check. Piece of old blanket. Check. Due to excessive use, it began to slowly disintegrate. Eventually I went swimming in Turkey and the last bit fell out of my velcro back pocket. I was initially really annoyed/panicked. Why I was I so stupid to swim with it. Why did I even have it with me on the beach (that's the more pertinent question). Then I felt liberated. I was free from my addiction. Today I remain free, though once a rubaholic...the pleasure remains and I still indulge in hotel sheets and upmarket restaurant tablecloths/napkins. But my house is off limits. Thanks to all for your honesty. You are not alone.

    • I suck my tongue all the time (It's a family thing from my dad's side. My aunt and Uncles even dad did it but he learned to stop on his own) Well yeah I rub things between my fingers too. bc I like the feel of like plastic shopping bags and like clothes and earlier I found my self rubbing a ziplock bag on the edge of the kitchen counter. My niece had figured out I did this little habit to and asked me about it I told her the truth (IDk!) So yeah I'm glad I'm not alone with this little habit.
