I've never had a name for this impulse. The need to rub a fabric. A bunch of people claim silk is their preference here, and I started on silk. Some people relate this to childhood trauma involving their mothers, I can relate to this. When I was about two I had a Raggity Andy blanket. It had a smooth silk lining and I can almost remember how it felt and what it looked like. Sky blue... I liked to feel it and I found I could press the fabric together and slide my thumb and forefinger together to create a soothing feeling. My mother was a drug addict and my parents were getting divorced. Sleeping at night was easy with my Raggity Andy blanket. Cut to when I was in foster care and my foster dad sees me do it. His eyes twitch slightly and I can tell it bothers him. I don't make a sound when I do it but I don't hide it. He ends up telling me that it's a sign of a future pedophile. He tells me I should be ashamed. I don't let him see me do it after that. Cut to today and I'm watching Joe Rogans podcasts on youtube- I'm rubbing with both hands and my fingers are getting a little numb from the constant rubbing. I become curious again as to why I do it. The times I've google this habit before turned up no results. I get the bright idea to simplify my search terms to "rubbing fabric between fingers". This thread was like heaven. People focused on silk a bunch. Silk and tags are great but I make do with what I have on me. usually a cotton shirt and jean pants. The rubbing for me is to cause a little friction as in to rub the threads against its self to create the feeling almost like when one sips up a zipper. Thanks for putting my mind at ease and making a thread on this site. Thanks for this site in general. I'll be looking up my other weird habits on here too.
