Wow....this was a BIG ordeal for me. I do not need to do this anymore and have not for several years, but it is something I have been thinking about a lot lately.....I had a blanket....when it was too difficult to get my (insert authority figure) to bring it with us, and I became too lazy/old to carry it, I started cutting sections off the silken edges off the blankets to carry with me/I had them placed where ever I went, like grandma's or the car. I called it "yoing-yoing." That is how it sounded, anyway.
I would basically suck my thumb and rub the silken edge on my face or just rub it between my fingers. I obsessed about the fabric until I was about 9 or 10. I think I stopped sucking my thumb around 12.
Well, to the point....I have had a revelation about this....I am a visual artist, in graduate school, and must make work about this concept. Thank you for being as curious as I am!!
