Oh. My. Gosh. I had no idea other people did this! I do it with certain fabrics as well. Not as with silk but with "crisper" fabrics-- there are some fabrics I actually intensely dislike (like gauzy curtains--feeling that kind of material against my skin actually wigs me out a little)-- I don't know if that is related or not, but I have always done this with pillowcases. Actually, I had this pillow when I was young that I used to do it with on the corners. My parents ended up calling it my "tickle pillow" -- it ended up pretty much deteriorating haha. I found a blanket later that was the exact same kind of material and I haven't been able to part with it since, and I'm 23 now. I also used to suck my thumb while doing this, but I've long since stopped doing that. (Though, to be honest, it was a very hard habit to break, and the only reason I think I ended up stopping is because I had to start wearing a mouthguard to sleep since I grind my teeth at night). I believe this must just be one of the body's natural ways of relieving extra stress or energy, because the blanket is really soothing to me. Sometimes I grab it to "tickle" my fingers while I read a book or watch a movie. I have sometimes taken it on vacation, but it's kind of embarrassing, so I think I'll probably try to stop doing that... it *is* quite a lot harder to sleep without it though. Guess you just have to find people who are comfortable enough with you to accept your quirks.
