I am so glad I found this!! I've researched this before and couldn't come up with anything.
My addiction is polyester. I had a flower girl dress made for me when I was 9 for my aunt's wedding and it was made from pink polyester. I had scraps leftover from the making of the dress that I would carry around everywhere and rub between my fingers all day. I also loved rubbing the tags that come on stuffed animals. The tags would end up all curled up from the constant rubbing. I've also rubbed ribbons and those prize ribbons someone else mentioned. But my absolute favorite is polyester camisoles worn under business style jackets. I buy them and cut them into two large pieces. I like to have lots of room to rub. The smaller pieces get worn out too quickly.
I keep one under my pillow and one in my car. I did bring a small scrap of it with me when I went to bootcamp. I just couldn't imagine two months without it.
I don't need it with me all the time though. I mainly enjoy rubbing it when I'm driving long distances, watching movies, or lounging around the house. It doesn't prevent me from getting anything done and I've never considered it a bad thing. I've always wondered if there is some psychological explanation behind it though. I don't think it is a problem though. It's relaxing and calming. Just a habit that brings peace.
I read from above posters that they have names for theirs. I do as well. I call it my swooshy. I've only ever told two people in my life about my love of polyester. Neither thought much of it and didn't make a big deal out of it, but I still like to keep it private. I'm glad to have people to share this with though :)
