Is it normal to lose my voice so fast?

So whenever I talk, well I talk a lot, but when I talk for even a short period of time, I start to lose my voice. Like it gets scratchy like a person when they're losing their voice.. I've had throat problems since I was 9, and I've gotten my tonsils out, etc, but it's almost like my voice is overworked.. Sometimes it gets really bad, usually after like.. Singing (I'm not a singer, I mean singing loudly to the radio) and i can barely talk, so is this normal??????

Is It Normal?

  • You may be abusing your vocal cords by the way you use them, or eating/drinking things that dry up your throat, etc.
You may want to consider drinking hot tea or pineapple juice, maybe a simple cough drop will do. If those don't work, you probably should see a doctor.

  • @OP:

Drink warm tea. Green tea with lemon is very soothing. Singers drink Ginger tea which helps with the throat. If it keeps happening, it might be a good idea to see a doctor.

  • The same thing happens to me! You probably have bad allergies like I do because I'm constantly clearing my throat, and my voice sounds funny If I dont clear my throat before I talk!

    • You're doing right, then. In other thing you could do is look up singing tips online. Whether you sing or not, it could help you with your voice.

  • You're not alone. I'm having the same problems because I'm giving up smoking and because I love dairy food. My voice is growly at the best of times but it's cracking as well. I don't have any solutions for you (if I did, I'd follow them myself). Just wanted you to know you're not alone.

  • Like Cover said, it could be how you used them or the things you consume. Tea is usually beneficial for the voice and talking softly. I often find it hard to talk softly when I'm agitated and I have hurt my voice a few time because of it. You say you've been having problems since you were a kid. Maybe you should see a specialist to make sure.

    Good Luck!
