Is it normal to like someone you've never met

I don't think it's any different than catching someone's eye in a crowd. The internet is part of all our lives now. My sister recently married someone she first met on the internet.

Talk to him.

I've tried the "Hey I added you on facebook and now I want to have a place in your life! :)" many times.

Never worked for me...
It saddens me that it probably never will...

Honesty is worth it's weight in gold.

Next time you talk to him say "I'm fingering myself thinking of you."

That'll get the message through... very subtly.

Only on facebook? Just make sure you talk to him more online before trying to meet him in person. You can be meeting anyone on the internet.
