Is it normal to leave food rotting around where you live?

Sometimes I'll leave dirty dishes around my apartment that still have a lot of food left and the food starts to rot. Is this normal? The most major thing I left to rot was a large pumpkin from Halloween. The pumpkin broke down in a heap of white and black mold on my kitchen counter.

      I just get lazy and it doesn't bother me. I don't see what the big deal is, honestly.
