I would advise against picking up any snake, especially if you don't know what kind of snake it is.
There are only about 20 different kinds of venomous snakes in North America, and even then, most of them are different kinds of rattlesnakes such as the Mojave, Sidewinder (Horned Rattler), Eastern/Western Diamondback, Timber Rattler, etc), all of which are pretty easy to identify, but these are the main ones to watch out for:
Yellowbelly Sea Snake
Any kind of rattlesnake
Coral Snake
Copperhead
Cottonmouth (Water Moccasin)
Is it normal to just pick up wild snakes (I did)?

I'm pretty sure there's other ones as well.
