Is it normal to just pick up wild snakes (i did)?

So, out of the blue, yesterday I see this snake slithering along the grass at my house. I was kind of fascinated watching it from a distance. I have dogs so I put them in the house. After that, went back to watching this snake. What do I do? I picked it up :-) Apparently, I watched enough Jeff Corwin and all that as a kid, lol. That was a cool experience. Nope, never ever thought, go for it, just pick up a snake. It was about 8 ft in length. I set it free near a wooded area in my yard. Beautiful creature.

i have never seen a non venomous snake in the wild. only water moccasins copperheads and rattlesnakes. and i see them every trip i make into the wild. so i have never had the desire to pick one up. I bet im the only human alive or dead that has seen a carp, a rabbit and a water moccasin at the same time all within two feet of one another. I do love my planet

I would advise against picking up any snake, especially if you don't know what kind of snake it is.

There are only about 20 different kinds of venomous snakes in North America, and even then, most of them are different kinds of rattlesnakes such as the Mojave, Sidewinder (Horned Rattler), Eastern/Western Diamondback, Timber Rattler, etc), all of which are pretty easy to identify, but these are the main ones to watch out for:

    Yellowbelly Sea Snake
    Any kind of rattlesnake
    Coral Snake
    Copperhead
    Cottonmouth (Water Moccasin)

I'm pretty sure there's other ones as well.

tbh i'd only ever pick a snake up if i knew what breed it was and if it was venomous or not.
