Is it normal to judge people so harshly based on first impressions?

Is it normal to judge people this harshly based on first impressions? I can meet a person and instantly loathe them. My sister had a friend over tonight and as soon as the friend said a word to me, I knew I hated her. She didn't say anything mean- just "Hi, nice to meet you." There was just something about her that I couldn't stand. For the whole rest of the time I saw her I was either rude or tried to avoid her. I do this regularly, but only to a tiny percentage of people I meet. Then, whatever that person does from that point on, even if it's something I could see myself doing, makes me want to either leave the room or punch them. Usually when I have these kinds of impressions of people, I can never change my mind about them.

Is It Normal?

  • It's probably normal but that doesn't make it right. I'm a big believer in second chances and I've had to eat crow many times in the past.

  • you are way to critical. you size people up the instant you meet them. then you are rude because they didn't say hello correctly. where is all this wisdom coming from? you are a brat

  • "Hi, Nice to meet you"

Dont get me wrong I agree completly with casualcrow. But "Hi, nice to meet you" seems abit wooden. A greeting like that would tell me that they either need to losen up a bit or that the're nervous to meet you. Espesily as a social greeting. It would be totaly normal as a buisness greeting. Give her a chance, You might end up becomeing friends.

  • You should seriously give people more than one chance to make an impression, not everybody is perfect. Maybe you have some social issues of your own that you need to learn to handle before you start meeting new people.
