My mother's name is kathleen, but she goes by kathi, and there is a girl I know who's name is kathryn, and goes by Kathy. Would it be strange to have sex with this girl, or date her? For me, and other people.
As long as you are not having sex with this girl BECAUSE she has the same name as your mom, I see no problem.
Some time ago I had a boyfriend with the same name as my dad. I did not call him by name if it could be avoided. It was just a little weird to me. And my little brother was bangin a chick with the same name as me. He found that weird too.
Sounds fine to me, though if you and she become a unit the names will create constant confusion among family friends.

My brother is dating a girl with the same name as me, but he changed it up so there's an 'a' at the end of her name instead of 'y'. You could ask to call her Kat or something if it bugs you.

Names are just names. I know two guys named Corey, they are in no way similar other than their name and the fact that they know me.
