I think if your life is in danger and you have absolutely NO other option, shove the woman away. Rather push her away, because hitting someone back isn't self defense, its "you hit me so I'm hitting back".
You don't have to strike back, and its wrong to strike a woman. I'm not a feminist and by all means, I think its sad how women use their gender to get away with murder (sometimes literally) but why hit her back, you know? Push her away and make a run for it.
I've seen guys slapping a woman when a woman slaps them and it looks so disgusting. A man is always stronger and physically more likely to hurt a woman than the other way around, so I don't see it as fair if a man strikes a woman.

There's literally no way someone can think calm, rational thoughts while someone rushes toward them with a weapon. You don't have time to think of 'should I shove, punch, bite, etc', you only have instinct. That instinct is 'Oh shit, I have to do -anything- quickly before she-- Ahh!' *Slam* *Crack* That's how quick it happens. Social standards come second to staying alive.
As for the childish slap, it has no relevance to the question asked. Slapping isn't attacking. An attack is a harsh, relentless assault, not a pathetic temper tantrum.
