Is it normal to hear different languages?

Sometimes I hear people talking and I like to guess where they are from, as I am interested in languages and peoples backgrounds. However in the last few months I found out I was mishearing. I once thought I heard these two girls alternating between German and English (they were speaking English). Then recently in France I thought this couple were speaking English but they were actually speaking French. Is this normal considering that these languages have many similarities. P.S my mum sometimes experiences this.

    Yeah you often come across younger generations of Germans who speak this weird Hybrid of German and English known as "Denglisch".

    Its not really normal cuz you dont know the language. But ! It`s normal if you actually do know the language. Like personally, I speak french, english and spanish and when I listen to a movie, couple or whatever, I dont really realise the language they are speaking cuz I understand what they says. x)

    Since you're interested in linguistics, why not study The Brothers Grimm and Chomsky.
