Is it normal to have zero interest in travel?

I'm in my early twenties, and I'm watching bemusedly as my friends are all clamoring to get out of the country and travel. They seem fascinated by other people and cultures. Sometimes I'm even invited to come along on some hypothetical expedition. And yet, I'm really just not bloody bothered. I don't care. I don't want to backpack through Thailand, I don't want to travel to Italy, and I certainly don't want to teach English in South Korea. I've been around. I've been to old castles in Scotland, I've swam with stingrays in the Caribbean, I've stood atop the Mayan Ruins of Chichen Itza; I've done a few things. But I'm just positively bored by the idea of doing any more traveling. I'd rather stay in and read book than leave Canada. I like it here. Armchair anthropology just bores me to tears; people in general do, for that matter. Is there something wrong with me?

Is It Normal?

  • I don't blame you. Hypothetical expeditions are really boring compared to real ones.

  • I have no desire to travel either. I used to have a list of places to go see before I die, and I've seen a couple of them, and felt no sense of fulfillment at all. I've decided that I don't really want to travel when what I thought would be the best things I could see in my life left me feeling apathetic once I'd seen them.

What I'm trying to say is; completely normal, and I agree with you.

  • Not everyone wants to travel. I on the other hand would love to! I would like to learn the languages of the places I want to go. There is no point, IMO, in going somewhere unless you can actually speak with natives you know? I don't just want to visit monuments and ruins and shyt like that. I can learn about that in a history book. I want to talk to the people.

  • Then don't do it. You are your own person, and you have the ability to lake your own decisions. Your friends are making theirs. Nothing wrong with it :)

  • Na, perfectly normal.

Those things of interest to you, you have seen and done.
Today, the world is pretty small. You can learn about places and foreign culture from the comfort of your own home, and lots of foreign culture is sweeping in across the borders.

I have 1 or 2 things left that i'll eventually get around to doing, but other than that, i'd rather stay home and spend the money saved in other ways.
