  • While drunken encounters in a safe environment (like in a committed relationship) can be fun, if you feel the need to use alcohol every time, it is probably a sign that you need help letting go of inhibitions. Think about what might be causing this. Do you feel self-conscious about disrobing for your partner? Or are there unresolved problems in your relationship that keep you from fully relaxing with your husband unless you're drunk?

Once you know what the reason is, and you've addressed that, there are a few things you can do to make intimacy more comfortable. Try extending foreplay so you have more time to get in the mood. Also, work on steadily decreasing your alcohol intake before sex. For example, cut back to maybe 1 1/2 glasses of wine instead of 2 full glasses. Gradually decrease the amount from there. Try to get to the point where you can have sex while buzzed instead of drunk. With time, you may be able to enjoy intimacy without alcohol. But if the problem persists despite your best efforts, you may want to seek professional assistance.
