Is it normal to have these fleeting thoughts?

  • I was diagnosed with depression and a mild form of OCD five years ago. I do NOT exhibit any of the symptoms you've mentioned.

You probably already know this, but Obsessive Compulsive Disorder is all about unwanted and repeated behaviors, such as the uncontrollable urge to flick a light switch on and off a set number or times before feeling comfortable enough to move on to something else.

Your behaviors and distorted thinking, however, seem to fall very much under the category of schizophrenia. One common symptom involves a person believing someone or something may be out to get them or is watching them and controlling their every move. You mentioned that your mother has schizophrenia. Does she have these symptoms?

It should be noted that the greatest risk for developing schizophrenia is having a relative with the disease. Since your mom has been diagnosed (I assume) with schizophrenia, there's a good chance you may have it, as well.

In my personal opinion, from what I was able to gather from your post, these paranoid thoughts have yet to consume your life, but please don't take this problem lightly. Do not tell yourself that you think you may just be a little depressed and OCD. You're very lucky to have noticed this problem early and with the right help and a proper diagnosis, you may be able to stop this from getting worse and truly interfering with your life. If left untreated, schizophrenia can develop into a devastating and life-altering illness. I hope you don't let it get to that point.

    Good luck to you :)

    • Yeah she'd always look out the window thinking someone was watching her. She thought my dad was the devil and ran around the neighborhood with him chasing her until 6AM. I remember her telling my brothers and me to come outside with her and stare at the sun. She also has OCD. Touching the stove knobs and counting then switching the light switch on and off and then running back to the stove to do it all over again. She washed her hands so much they were all cracked, sore and bleeding. If anyone moved anything even the slightest she'd know and spend an hour fixing it.

Thanks for your post it was helpful. :)
