You're right! The rules for getting into heaven are not fair at all! God gives us the free will to do our own thing and screw up our lives and the lives of people around us, and then sort of like an earthly parent who's child "can do no wrong", he says "you screwed up, but you know what? I love you so much that I'm going to make like this never happened. I've sent my son Jesus to take the penalty for your sins so that if you will only believe in Him and what He's done for you, you can have a free pass into heaven, into eternal life."
Jesus demonstrated that love when He told His Father to forgive the Roman soldiers who were nailing him to the cross, and when He told the thief on the cross next to him, who professed his belief in Jesus, that the thief would be with Him in paradise. No, it certainly doesn't seem fair to me, but that's how love behaves itself!
That's one thing I never understood; Jesus taking the penalty for all our sins. Does that mean we'll be forgiven for everything..? So, we're sort of "allowed" to sin, as long as we repent?
And couldn't god just forgive us anyway? I don't see why Jesus had to be killed to make that happen. I just don't see the connection there...
