Is it normal to have terrible jaw/chin pain after wisdom tooth surgery

Hi, I am looking for some answers, and thought maybe posting in these forums might be a good start. I had my lower 2 wisdom teeth extracted on May 19th of this year. I am 32 years old, a non smoker, and I followed pretty much all the post op instructions to a T. About two weeks ago, when the jaw numbness that I experienced wore off, I discovered that my chin and jaw were in excruciating pain. I went back to the doctor and he told me I had dry socket and put some sort of packing in. He did this 2 times and told me to take advil. I've been keeping it really clean, but I'm still in extreme pain. The pain is not in the socket, it's in the chin, lip, etc. I cannot sing, I can barely talk without being in terrible pain. If I try to make an OOO mouth, it feels like someone is ripping my muscle out of my face. It hurts worse when I'm sitting and lying down and it is EXCRUCIATING when I'm in the car for some reason. My massage therapist says that it's still swollen.

I've had an X-ray just a week ago, would infections and stuff show up on that? The doctor said there's nothing really wrong on the x-ray and he's not sure why I am in that sort of pain. He says he thinks it will get better with the advil, but I"m not too keen on taking this strong a dose of advil for such a long time. My stomach's not great to begin with.

Anyway, i also bit my lip repeatedly when it was still numb, could this have something to do with it?

I guess I'm really looking for an ETA on when I can expect this to start to heal, and I'm looking to find out if it's going to heal on its own or if it's something I've got to go back and harass my doctor about. I was there 3 times last week, so he's definitely taking this seriously. He seems to feel that it's just going to go away on its own, but it hasn't really improved much since Memorial Day.

Is this normal? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

ps - this does not feel like TMJ, either. I had TMJ, that's why I got my teeth out. The TMJ seems to have actually cured itself because of the surgery.

Is It Normal?
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

  • I myself had my w. teeth removed (same month!!) Of course it's normal! It isn't exactly a walk in the park when someone extracts two bones from you body. I even got a fever because the gaping hole became infected, and I've never felt so much pain. Even infections are normal because of a weakspot in your mouth.

  • My pain lasted for 4 weeks, but had much reduced by the last week. I only needed strong painkillers for the first 2 weeks, after that is was the normal stuff as and when I needed it.

  • It's nerve damage. Happened to me after jaw surgery. It's been almost 20 years and it's still there.

  • When I got my wisdom teeth out I remember the doc saying that something like this could happen. I don't remember exactly but it might have something to do with the nerve...I dk. Maybe get a second opinion because I don't know if it'll go away on it's own or not. It didn't happen to me when I got them out. Sounds like a nerve problem though.

  • People are way to quick to dismiss this as normal! I had an identical experience. Its been 8 days since I had my bottom wisdom teeth extracted and it has been HELL!! I was instructed by the oral surgeon to check into an ERb after i emailed her a picture of my gigantic face and explaining my symptoms. I did that but I was literally called a "sissy" and sent home. I am not a sissy for sure and birthed 2 large babies (I'm not supposed to be able to give birth vaginally because I'm too tight),,,, having my teeth pulled was far more painful ! I went back to the oral surgeon the day after with a face so swollen my esophagus was being compressed and I was having difficulty breathing. Of course the ER physicians knew this but didn't take it seriously. I was also in so much pain that I couldn't stop myself from sobbing day in and day out. So, the oral surgeon opened my sutures and packed my sockets with medication (even more pain,) I basically squirmed and wailed uncontrollably the entire time. She tripled my antibiotics and pains meds and sent me home with no further instructions or explanations. Oddly enough I felt immediate relief, that was 4 days after my initial surgery. I followed up with my PCP on the fifth day whereon she was very concerned and verified that my experience was NOT normal. She gently felt my face (ER physician and oral surgeon were too rough.) She said the reason why I was so swollen is because I had a major infection that my antibiotics couldn't handle so my lymph nodes kicked in and overcompensated, at that point they were massive and rock hard! She assured me that my new dose of antibiotics would do the job and eventually my lymph node swelling would subside, but if within a week of seeing her they don't resume to normal size we have a problem. The swelling has decreased substantially however I have noticed that once my pain meds start wearing off I still have a tremendous amount of pain in my jaw, especially in my chin. What the heck? Now what? I'll have to check in with the oral surgeon on Monday (today is Saturday) and my PCP

  • You should definitely get that checked out again. You shouldn't be having that amount of pain after this duration of time. I had all four of my wisdom teeth taken out last Friday, and didn't get stitches for any of them. My dentist prescribed me extra strength Ibuprofen and Tylenol 3 with codeine and I discomfort and pain but the medication has helped.

  • I had my two Wisdom teeth Removed, it was really unbearable. Removal of Wisdom teeth is not joke, after that you have to tolerate a lot of pain. Proper Precaution like avoiding snacks, ice cream can pay you a relief. Regular Dental Check up is must in such a situation because if you did not take care then the situation goes from bad to the worst. For more information on Wisdom teeth Extraction,Please do visit

  • I've had my wisdom teeth out twice and this is definitely not normal. What you're going through is awful! When I had mine out, I was fine the next day, both times. Infection may not show in an X-ray if it's in the soft tissue. Please get a second opinion. At the very least, your dentist should put you on antibiotics even if just as a preventative measure. I really am concerned about the quality of the healthcare you're getting. before you get that second opinion, go to a GP and get a course of antibiotics.

  • That is dreadful service your current doctor has been giving you!
No decent practitioner would fob you off with painkillers and say there's nothing to worry abut when you are clearly in agony!
I hope you can get medical insurance/help towards dental costs/are on Medicare (or equivalent).

I'm not too clued up about how things work in the US, but I hope you know that someone across the pond has had wisdom teeth out and is empathising for you.

    • I just want to let you know that it is over a year later. The pain is not excruciating, but it never completely went away. It's amazing how little doctors care when you are not a "textbook case".

I hope you feel some sort of relief. I'm better, but I think I have a very long way to go before I am 100 percent.

  • You should get a second opinion from a different doctor in a different practice, in my opinion.
