It's not common, but some people do have single, isolated snapshots from very early ages. They aren't quite like adult memories that have a little more context but are more like brief vignettes with a couple of really vivid details (the Fanta, the green couch). It's totally possible that you remembered your first steps and that it was rainy, but it would be unlikely for you to remember every detail of what your mom was wearing, what was on the television, or what happened after you fell.
You aren't bullshitting; you just happen to have saved a scrap of your life that wasn't touched by childhood amnesia.
As for my earliest memories, I distinctly remember being in my crib and watching a roach fly in through the window. It scared the shit out of me, and I screamed my head off. The white crib rails were very clear to me, so I know I was still a very little kid at the time.
I also remember being in a high chair and spitting up chocolate milk on a picture book I was looking at, which made me cry because I didn't mean to ruin the book. It's gross, and I wish I could remember fun things instead, but that's what I got stuck with. First steps would be much better to remember. :)
Is it normal to have such an early memory?
