As long as you'd be happy to be in a situation where, say, you got knocked down by a car, urgently required medical help or you'd die, and passers-by just laughed at your misfortune and went on their way because you shouldn't expect what you're not willing to give.

I was illustrating people not sympathising to make a point about people not sympathising. It made sense to me.
