Is it normal to have has sex with same sex friends while growing up?

Me and one of my best friends (same sex) used to live a few doors down from each other, around the age of 12-15 we used to fool around in his bedroom. It used to start with him pretending to be asleep, but eventually he got more into it.
At some point, I think he got a little scared of admitting to himself that he liked guys, and we lost touch. We reconnected a couple of years ago after about 13 years apart, and literally within 30 minutes of seeing each other we were playing with each other.
When we were fooling around as kids, we never actually had sex, but after reconnecting, we'd meet up and whole weekends in bed together, doing everything we never got to try with each other as kids.
I'm just so thankful that we got talking again. It was a huge regret of mine that we never had sex when we were younger, but eventually I got my wish, several times XD
