Is it normal to have empathy for dogs and not humans?

Seriously I couldn't care less about murders or earthquakes or terrorism where people are killed. But if I see or hear of an animal being abused I become enraged! Especially dogs. I could literally picture myself killing someone who hurts a dog.
Is this normal?
