Is it normal to have elaborate fantasies about receiving awards?

I'm quite young (19) and I study psychology at university. I have frequent, elaborate fantasies about receiving awards for research or innovation in the field even though I'm not a researcher.

Am I overly obsessed with fame and recognition, or is this something everyone does?

My aunt claims she got an award for her recycling bin contents being so perfect.

At least your fantasies are of something ambitious and impressive.

Rewards for psychology aren't impressive in the slightest.

I never said I accomplished anything. I just said that rewards for psychology aren't impressive. Anyway, I'm sure I've done quite a few good things you haven't.

I very much doubt that. You're one of the most ignorant people I've had the misfortune of seeing on this site, but that's hardly impressive.

People who study psychology don’t innovate shit, they mill about and get nowhere.

Ummm,,, excuse me..my kid is in university studying psychology, and I'm a great case to start with. Don't make me come down there, mister man. It's a very high paying job too.

I’m a great case to start with, and studied it myself, it’s got some good points if you don’t get bogged down in it.

It’s made too many mistakes and constantly shifts and contradicts. It’s most certainly bordering on pseudoscience. And I do know what I’m talking about.

Ahh, right you are, but that wasn't her first interest at all, but her dang father dissuaded her from her passion, then my little brother got to chatting with her, and that's what she went with. I say fuck it all. Collage is a waste.

Well than she has no business being in school. I actually sorta tried talking her into dropping out of high school....she is too smart for school

Just because a job is high paying doesn't mean it actually does anything useful.

On a forum, you are talking to everyone who reads what you have written, whether it is directed at someone in particular or not.

Again, ignorance. And arrogance. Amazing combination.

Arrogance and ignorance have nothing to do with the fact that pay rate is not related to the usefulness of a job. For example, elementary and middle school teachers are paid very little, but their job is extremely important, while AAA video game developers are paid a lot, when their jobs aren't actually useful.

Your attitude on this post clearly indicates that you believe psychology studies belong in the category of "not doing anything useful", which is both arrogant and ignorant. Your entire contribution has been to try and shit on people while not understanding the actual topic at hand. Don't get upset when it backfires.

Also, you really should quit your cherry picking, it's tedious and makes you look worse.

I think the fact that you question whether it’s normal rules out any worry about serious narcissism. I think it’s also healthy and normal to ask this question, and, everyone has their own type of fantasy. Fantasies are reflections of desires and sometimes they need to be checked, sure. But perhaps you desire to be recognized for doing something great and what’s wrong with that as long as you actually do something great?! Work hard and cherish your moment when it comes. Don’t cheat and don’t rest on your laurels. Recognize and applaud others, too. Just keep it all in balance and you’re good. The fantasy can also be a motivator for you.

Definitely not healthy to seek fame for fames sake. Achieving something amazing that helps people and then relishing in the glory after is not aweful.

Nothing wrong with having ambitions, there’s so much left to learn about our brains and behaviour.

Be sure to credit us crazies on IIN for inspiring your interest in abnormal psychology.

I think it's normal-ish. I sometimes rehearse acceptance speeches. It used to be for an Oscar (even though I'd much sooner win a Nobel prize) but it's become more mundane and it feels like the more mundane it is, the better.

Like, I got the award for the person in my train carriage who'd pulled their sock up to the most perfect height. I knew there was a woman in the next carriage whose sock was more perfectly heighted and that she'd win if she came in my carriage, and so I make that happen halfway through the imaginary awards ceremony.

It's like that year La La Land got announced as Oscar winner even though it was really Moonlight. I imagine the perfectly heighted sock woman's name is actually Moon Light, and I'll leave it up to you to determine what La La Land says about me.
