Is it normal to have disturbing thoughts of doing embarrasing things?

I often have thoughts and urges to do really inappropriate or embarrassing things in formal or serious situations, just to get a reaction. For example, when the boss is giving his yearly talk to the staff (300+) I'm fighting in my head so much, as though I have tourettes of the mind, to stop myself shouting out something offensive (I've nothing against the guy). Sometimes the urge is so strong I'm also thinking of an excuse, such as 'fake fainting', in case I actually do it. Or if I'm at the edge of a cliff, I'll be thinking 'jump!' - so I move away!

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

  • I too get a thought of jumping when near a cliff, often when I've been on a ferry to the isle of white I've had the urge to jump over the side, it's completely normal and it's a basic human attribute called thanatos, according to Sigmund Freud.

I should add its human genetics, the emotional state of the individual doesn't factor

    • Thanatos alot for that Kingofcarrotflowers :-)

Also answers my question of what stops me doing it? Thankfully my Eros has been the stronger of the two up to now! If my thanatos ever gets the better, then if the outcome is losing my job or jail, then I'll let you know. If you hear nothing...

      • No prob :) and haha, thank you for the pun, I only wish I knew it when I was still studying psychology,

I should point out though that, as with many aspects of psychology, the idea of Eros and thanatos or death drive is just a theory,

I wouldn't exactly call myself a Freudian, I believe he did some great work in his field and raised awareness also, but there are theories if his that I believe are massively incorrect, even though I do agree with many of his theories, Eros and thanatos being one of them
