Is it normal to have delayed emotions?

When I get bad news or something really awful happens I don't usually feel much at the time. Sometimes it's days, weeks or even months but it eats away at me and eventually it hits me hard and I get really depressed about it and just stay in bed for a few days. Why can't I just cry or get angry when stuff happens and get it over with like people on tv. Is the way that I react to stuff normal?

  • My emotions are delayed as well. Even positive ones.

I think it's denial, like rose posted. It takes a while for reality to sink in.

  • Nn. It's normal for me, at least. Processing isn't my strong suit.

  • Are you familiar with the process of grieving? There are five stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance.

Do a Google search on the stages of grief, and you might learn some helpful that that may give you some insight.

    • I hadn't thought of it this way. I suppose grieving isn't exclusive to death, this philosophy can be applied to all forms of loss.

      • Yeah, I remember someone telling me to treat a bad breakup like a death when I was 20, and it actually helped me.
