No, they aren't "pets," they are commodities that are sold for use and profit. Do you do this to YOUR "pet"? No? Of course not. Whenever I hear people claim they "love the like pets" and they are raising the animals to consume or sell, they are lying to you to assuage their own consciences because they know those animals are anything but pets.
No, I mean the ones who lay eggs. You can have them as a pet even if they lay eggs. =P My family used to be farmers and we had pet chickens, but as a bonus they layed eggs.

Duh! Of course it's normal! What do you think farmer's chickens are called? PETS! :) Even if it's for food, it's still called a pet!
