Is it normal to have bruised earring holes

I got my ears (lobes, not cartilage) pierced about 7-8 weeks ago. I'm 20, so I got it done later than most. I took proper care of them and they seemed to heal OK.

But whenever I go to change them out, the earring holes look kind of bruised and a very small amount of sebaceous fluid comes out sometimes. The fluid is not discolored, there are no funny smells, nothing hurts or feels hot or swollen. It just looks bruised and feels a bit tender.

Is this normal? Or am I on the road to a possible infection?

  • It might be the type of metal. I get that even when I use hypo-allergenic. If I keep them in too long, it can get infected. Sensitive skin.

The trick is to stick with pure steel for long term, and for fashion earrings with metal alloys, alternate and give your poor lobes a rest in between for a day or two.
