is it normal to have been hit with a belt growing up?

  • It is normal, I was done the same way as a child.

However, I do consider hitting a child with an object such as a belt to be a form of abuse because you ARE hitting the child with a weapon. The belt is being turned into a weapon when you turn your child into a target.

I have no issue with corporal punishment when executed responsibly. Children do not always understand reason but they understand a swat on the butt and when we are talking about a small, clueless human being in a world full of danger, pedophiles, cars with distracted drivers, power outlets and appliances and sharp objects, those swats on the butt may be the difference regarding whether or not that child remembers that trying to crawl over the baby gate to get to the swimming pool that they could drown in is wrong.

As a friend of mine once told me, there is whoopin' and there is beating and you can do one without doing the other.

My only problem with corporal punishment is when parents use it as a crutch rather than using it only when needed and not teaching their kids right from wrong, rather preferring to spank them instead. Or when they seriously lose their shit and start beating the kid.
