Is it normal to have a random sharp pain in the lower abdomen?

I was sitting on the couch, and without moving or sitting in an awkward position, I got this stabbing, sharp pain right above my belt line about an inch, to the left of my belly button. It was pretty intense, but went away in about three seconds. I stood up in a panic (I'm a very anxious person and these kinds of things make me think the worst such as "OMFG IT'S A CYST" or " OMFG, MY PANCREAS BURST, IM DYING". Either way, I went up stairs, took deep breaths and tried to calm down. I'm fine now, but just curious. Any ideas? Thanks guys :)

  • I get this in the same point in my lower left abdomen. It feels like a sharp nerve pain. Nothing bad but sometimes runs up my left side.

  • Ignore bachoman! It's probably gas or something called IBS ( irritable bowel syndrome), also known as a nervous gut or more amusingly, spastic colon! I have it along with anxiety!! It's annoying and painful sometimes but totally harmless.

  • Gas. Don't worry unless it becomes persistent (days, weeks) and unbearable.

  • It's a type of hernia you can get when your a child, though it can carry on into your adult life, I'm guessing it's commonplace is around the belly button? It is actually when they muscle begins to tear and can cause serious problems later in life if not taken care of, either by surgery or just being aware of it, if the muscle tears completely there is a large possibility that your organs could actually slide through your muscle wall and entangle themselves resulting in a VERY painful death. YAY, I'm dappled jr

  • More than likely it's just gas.

  • I suffer from an anxiety disorder and have experienced the kind of stabbing pain that you described in loads of random places around my body. Health concerns are very common with anxiety too. Symptoms of anxiety are all harmless even though they lead us to believe otherwise. Don't worry about it and if it keeps comming back in the same place, see your doctor.
