Is it normal to have a lump on the scalp for two years?

I have a good size bulge on my head like a cyst or something maybe. It's hard and it's been there since I moved to a place that has well-water (if that has anything to do with it). I talked to my family about it and they didn't seem too concerned - they said they have one too. So apparently they think it's normal, but is it really? It doesn't do anything but prevent me from parting my hair certain ways but still, sometimes it concerns me.

Is It Normal?
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

  • you should shave your head and paint a bullseye on it, maybe someone would pop it for you.

  • My bf had 2 for about 2 years, didn't think much of them. One day he was messing around with a smaller one and it came out, so (DO NOT DO THIS!!) he had my sister and me get the other one. It was a painful process. What I'm about to say is not for the faint of heart. At first, this cottage cheese looking stuff came out, and he made us quit because of the pain. A couple days later he asked us to try again (Again, I do not recommend this) and what came out was one BIG solid, whitish mass. It looked like a fat worm. Then a pearly colored sac after that. It wasn't a bug, it was a cyst. We wore gloves and used sanitized implements and his head is completely fine now, hardly even a scar. But had we known what was going to cone out we would have had him get it surgically removed. I hope this helps.

  • Sounds like a sebaceous cyst. Basically a lump filled with the oils your skin makes. They can be there for ages, and often disappear on their own. They cause no harm.

  • I still have it and it does see to have gotten a bit bigger.. I don't think there's a way to tell when a story was posted. Thank you

  • I get those too. Probably nothin' to worry about but, still, you should see a doctor just to make sure.

  • My grandmother used to get these cysts on her scalp that were hard. They weren't dangerous or anything. I'd see a doctor, just in case. Maybe at your next physical.
