So yes, I will say that it is normal.
Personally, I would hope that he is caring for his child, works and pulls his own weight. If a man won't care for his child with another woman than to think he would care about yours would be naive, to say the least. Don't be with anyone that isn't even pulling their own weight and don't let yourself be fooled by excuses. Whether or not someone is "nice" shouldn't make you feel obligated to put up with them.
