Is it normal to have a best friend that you don't talk to that much?

I've had the same best friend since 2008. We've never met in person, though I bring it up some times. We've done a lot together and have made a lot of memories and have decided that the day that I get married, I'm making him my best man. Thing is, we don't talk a lot. I shoot him a message every now and then and some days we have a burst of consistent communication for a week or two straight that dies off and returns a few months later. I have other friends that I communicate with a lot more but I don't feel as close to.

In my opinion a best friend is tbe person you call when your car is stuck in a ditch and it's raining and someone needs to come help you and they drop everything to be there (metaphorically okay, I know there's stuff like AAA). And you'd do the same for them. So if this guy is that person for you then sure it's normal. But it seems like it'd be really hard to get to that level if you never see each other in person.
