Is it normal to hate when people say kids should find a job?

  • Well, I'm 19 and I do see where you are coming from. The US economy is still really sluggish...the GDP is growing at 1% per year, which does not create enough jobs for everyone to be able to hop into the workforce with ease. Outsourcing is big, and when companies exploit illegal immigrants for labor it really kills jobs. Even college grads are having a tough time finding a job.

However, ambition and dedication are still qualities that are just as important as are how cheap you are to employ and what your education is. Furthermore, there are certain fields such as customer service (restaurants, etc) where the businesses want employees who can relate to the customers(so, not illegal immigrants who don't speak English, even if they are willing to work for 1$ per hour). Also, minimum wage jobs don't really require experience. So you don't have to be a college grad with years of working experience to get a job at McDonalds.

So if an employer sees that you are committed and willing to do whatever it takes to get and keep a job, you will get a job. Especially if you are a relate-able person when it comes to customer service, so that you can reel in customers for your company.

So yeah, its tough out there. Companies don't really prefer young people. But I worked as a waiter when I was 16, and the way I got the job is by pestering the hiring manager over and over, so he knew that I really wanted the job. The reason why older people are so crotchety about it is because when it comes to minimum wage jobs where you don't need any experience or education, the way you get a job is by committing to finding a job. There aren't many out there, but if you keep trying you will get one. Simply giving up because its too hard to find a job is kind of being a bitch.
