I've been working since I was 13. I cleaned houses, mowed lawns, baby sat kids, raked leaves, painted fences, painted rooms, removed carpeting, installed carpeting, helped out at a realtors office archiving papers and keeping the place looking nice, worked on plumbing, roofed houses, framed houses, remodeled homes, built barbed wire fencing, done custom industrial painting and a lot more all before my 18th birthday.
To say that a minor can't get a job is a joke.
You can apply to work at a fast food restaurant, work for a clothing store part time, markets and grocers are always looking for help, house cleaning, baby sitting, helping move furniture, or any number of other things. If you sincerely wanted to put money in your pocket you'd find a way.
The economy isn't the same as it was when you were a kid, though. Where I live, at least, a lot of people can't afford to hire people, even kids, to do those things. Kids who want to work for the businesses you mentioned have to compete with adults for those positions, now, because the job market is so poor.
I've been trying to find at least some kind of easy job since I was 12 and never had luck. We live in flat so I can't clean houses, people around here all have kids above age 14, there are no fences, nobody here I asked wanted kid to paint wall, people don't even want to change their carpet etc. It's just different when you live in big city where people live in flats so they don't have garden or own roof.
I tried applying to work at fast food but nobody wanted someone without experience.
I sincerely want to work but no matter how hard I try I just can't.
You are correct. Even so my father still told me that when I was 12. He said "Well get a job"! I asked him how to get a job. He would get upset since I tried making up all these get rich quick schemes. Yet would get angry when I was 14 and would not stop trying to get one. It also is not fair since kids with business families get to have jobs earlier. Which everyone I new had family owned businesses. So they got all this money from jobs and I was not allowed to work. Which was unfair and stupid. My dad said it was ok when he was a kid to be 10 and toss papers. Now you have to be 18 and usually have a driver license which is complete shit. Why I do not think labor laws actually help children. They just crippled them making them more dependent on parents. So a lot of these 18 year olds do not have anything on record they can use to get a job. They can not say "I tossed papers when I was 10".
I'm 23 and in the same boat. I don't have much work experience because I've been focusing on school, but I can't get work experience unless I HAVE work experience... x.x It's very frustrating.
Go back to those fast food restaurants and do whatever you need to do that will convince the employers that you are willing to do anything to get the job. Hang around the store constantly, do some research about the store positions and explain to the employer that you would be a great cashier because you are honest and you are good at counting, or that you would make a great cook because you cook at home. You CAN get a job. Good luck.
Seems a lot of laws are aiming to do that now. They think they are helping but they do not help anyone. They just make them more dependent on parents and the system.
Is it normal to hate when people say kids should find a job?
