People don't just talk bad about you behind your back. They also gossip about any random thing...no matter how minuscule that you say or do...like if your house was a mess one time and they saw or you need new tires or you went out of town....really anything they can get their hands on. I personally don't think it's normal. I think it's an addiction for some...like a sickness. I know some women and a few men that as soon as you say hello to them they spill their guts about every tid bit they know including addtion info on people involved that you may not even know. It's horrible. I stay away from them. I always picture me letting something stupid slip and them chatting about it over dinner...I don't tell anyone ANYTHING and still gossip gets back to me. It seems to be extremely common in the female community.
