I know what you mean, most prom dresses are all layer upon layer of chiffon and endless ploofy material.
Just take some time to look around for what you really want, I managed to get a dress that was perfect for me without making me look like a reject barbie, although that was 5 years ago now.
As bronte says, try vintage stoeres or getting your dress made. Either that or find an ordinary party dress and customize it (if you can) into what you want.
