1. Water bill wasn't paid.
2. Gas bill wasn't paid, cold shower.
3. Living out of car.
4. Living in a crowded shelter.
5. Clinical depression, extreme self-neglect.
6. YMCA too far away.
7. Not enough money for a gym membership.
The list goes on.
You're right, you need more compassion and empathy. You have no idea the struggles people face in their daily lives. Right now, jobs are scarce. Money is tight. The necessities like bathing are often sacrificed to keep a roof over head or food in the stomach. Thanks to laundromats that are nearly everywhere, at least people can wash their clothes for a few quarters.
Too bad there's no way to tell who is struggling and who just doesn't care, so there's no point in complaining. OP either got to deal with it, car pool, or save up for a car or bike.
These people are usually dressed decent enough and certainly don't look poor. I'm a very compassionate person but if I couldn't get a shower I would go to a public restroom and wet a few paper towels, go into one of the stalls and wipe myself down as best I could. Especially under the arms. That should keep me smelling okay until I am able to get a real shower. Sorry, I don't believe ALL those people who stink are down on their luck. If they can afford money to ride the train then they can afford to buy a bar of soap. Many of them look like they're on their way to a job. And some are busy checking out Facebook from their phone! If they can afford that, then why not a bar of soap? You think they would want to be clean when going to work. Guess they don't care about offending their coworkers. I knew someone years ago who got fired because of body odor. He just refused to do anything about it.
Don't forget that there are people with different body types than you who sweat more than others, especially if overweight or nervous. However, I doubt you care about that.
You seem you rather have someone go, "OH my god, yous so right. Smelly ass people need to care about themselves more. Ugh." If you want to vent about petty nonsense, you'll get better results from your friends.
LOL! Petty Nonsense? YOU should be the one sitting between two stinking scumbags on a train ride for over an hour! I DON'T think you would sit there saying "Oh this is just petty, it doesn't bother me". Especially if you already didn't feel well before you got on the train. Don't make excuses for the nervous or overweight people. A dear friend of mine happens to weigh 300 pounds and she is one of the cleanest people I know! As for being nervous, there are special deodorants for that. There is no excuse for being a SLIMEBAG. Unless you are a homeless person. And I bet I'm more compassionate than you are. My vocation for the past 19 years has been working with mentally disabled children. I love them dearly and they love me. Thankfully most of them have good parents who teach them the right hygiene. Make all the excuses you want to. I'm sure you could write a book of them. But most of the time there is no true excuse for being a stinking piece of garbage. Case closed!
As a teen, I use to travel on the greyhound for 12 hours at a time to visit my family for holidays when my mother didn't make enough for me to use the train and worked too many hours to drive with me. So... yeah, I know. However, I'm not going to be a horrible person about it.
As for the children thing, good job? Wish you had the same compassion for adults, oh well.
I have plenty of compassion for adults. And I take care of a mentally disabled man every other Saturday. And I adore animals. I don't believe my opinion is being "horrible" about people with body odor. Spoke with a few people and they think my feelings about this are very normal. Also I just noticed that 85% of people polled on this site agree it is normal to feel disgusted. Well enough on this subject. Moving on.
