Take it to a dog rescue place while hes gone and say the dog got out and ran off. If he cares so little he'll forget about it in no time.
If that won't work I guess you have a big decision to make. Sounds trivial to desyroy a marriage over but if its ruining your life you either need to learn to live with the problem or get out. Not alot of other options that I can see.
