  • If you see this on more than a very rare occasion, it indicates that the restaurant is not following the "safe food" handling criteria developed by the Restaurant & Food Service Industry.

Within the USA I believe that now all states require that a restaurant or Food Service Manager be certified on those standards (There is a "Safe Serve" and "Safe Serve-Manager" training and certification program. My wife's school district requires that all kitchen workers get certified (and keep it current) within 6 months of employment, and that anyone in the higher 2 positions in the kitchen have the "Safe Serve-Manager" certification.

People with long hair who are handling food are required to have a hair or beard net.

I'd ask to speak to the manager about it (regardless of the country). If it reoccurs with any noticeable frequency at any restaurant or other facility within the USA (and most of the industrialized world), I'd report the facility to the city, county, etc. health inspector office.

    • Those only serve to limit the chances and servers aren't required to wear hair nets or hats. Nothing is 100% when it comes to that. Even if you follow all the guidelines and such it's bound to happen. It's not even all that uncommon. I work at a restaurant and we catch hair in the food a few times a week before it's sent out, we also wear hats and the servers with long hair have their hair tied back. Hair in food sounds disgusting, but it's really no different than touching foods with bare hands which is allowed as long as the food in question will be heated to the correct temp afterwards.
