Is it normal to hate homeless people a lot?

  • Maybe I'm just bumping into the wrong bums.

Exhibit A: A homeless lady walked into my wife's work and attacked my wife (grabbed my wife's head and slammed it into a glass display) for NO REASON and unprovoked. My wife just up and RAN away from her..terrified.

Exhibit B:I gave one dude a dollar (was all the cash I had and this particular bum didn't take Visa) after he stalked me for a city block trying to sell me some random DVD's. Upon receiving the dollar, he just looked at me and said , "A dollar? What can I get with a dollar?" I was like, "Give it back then." Of course he didn't. He just threatened to "swoop" me and made some gesture like he was going to take out my legs. Side note: this guy would have been a very successful used car salesman due to his perseverance and pretty good communication skills.

Exhibit C: I bumped into a guy on the side of the road while on my way home from the grocery store. He had a sign which read "ANYTHING helps." So I had a car full of groceries and I reached back and grabbed the first large food item I could find. It happened to be a full can of expensive brand pistachios (that I didn't want to give away). Upon receiving them, he looked at me all disgusted and said all sarcastically, "Well I was actually hoping for money."

For the record, I love people and I love giving to organizations and do so regularly. I don't feel obligated to help anyone in this dog eat dog world, but I like to help. I just believe that beggars can NOT be choosers. Also, I don't mind helping out the lady in the wheel chair or the war vet. I also recognize that each situation is a judgement call. It's the kid that would rather beg for free money then go work at McDonald's that pisses me off. I don't want to enable that kid.

Bums would go away ENTIRELY if we stopped giving them handouts and put our money into ORGANIZATIONS to help them. But I guess that's not as convenient as straight to your window service.
