Hey I 'm a designer! We are snobs. We design for the world. They follow our lead. We lead social unrest (per Hitler and Mao). We used to get paid like international accountants and lawyers. I made huge money for decades. But none of this is true anymore to a big degree.
Good thing I do more art gallery photo these days 'cause the pay now sucks. It sucks because of the massive amount of people joining the field every year. When I got of college, there were 7,000 designers in the country. In 2007, I read that there are 70,000 NEW MFAs coming out every year. Do the math — most of them suck. Not just design creativity and typography, but in terms of craftsmanship and production skills. 99% of these billion designers have no reason to be snobs anymore. I still can, however. ;)
