Cosplay isn't exclusive to anime. I mean I'm working on a Psylocke costume for my next con. (That's X-Men) Conventions are nerd prom, it includes all forms of geekdom.
Anime is eastern animation. ALL of eastern animation, so you can't sum it up so easily. Most importantly you need to understand that anime is normally a challenge. It's low budget, limited animation. They work with what they have, ease up.
If you were complaining about bad anime in the mainstream then I'd understand you. There's a lot of shit anime out there. But you're too general. You're basically insulting Tezuka and Miyazaki. ("I hate Twilight" vs "I hate modern books")
And "I don't understand why they obsess over it?" = "Man I hate geeks!"
Oh, because us geeks are so used to being loved? Dude, I'm a geek. I have my stack of comic books. I read comic books because I LOVE them. Am i pale and unhealthy? No. Anime fans watch anime because they LOVE them! And we geeks don't give up what we love to be cool. We don't do it so some no-name will hate us less.
But hey if it comforts you, you're not the only person in the world picking on geeks. So you're normal
