Complicated question. Lots of people exercise individualism by consuming media one step outside their idea of "mainstream", whether it's TV or music or fashion or whatever else. We remind ourselves that we are individuals when we imagine ourselves differently to other people.
Popularity is always relative. Mainstream hip-hop is usually more popular than alternative rock, but alternative rock is far more popular than black metal or underground hip-hop or folk punk or free jazz.
