That story is so classic in so many ways: It is textbook perfect and seems to ring true or else it could be a cleverly constructed fairy tale. I really don't know.
If it is true then has the writer any reason to complain of how things have turned out for him?
I think he has because the people who should have loved him most terribly traumatised him and he has only partly recovered from the experience. I feel sorry for that 14 year old boy.
But he's got a lot to be thankful for. I wish him well and hope he finds the peace of mind he obviously seeks.
