Is it normal to go to a bar alone?

i don't usually drink but I would like to get little night life in my life again. I just feel like in the past when i've gone to bars alone 9 out of 10 times i felt kind of weird, just me and myself amongst all the noise + people are usually there with people so it becomes hard sometimes to just go up to an entire group to chat with them. Got me wondering is it even normal in the first place to go to a lively bar alone?
would you see this as weird? would you or have you gone to the bar alone?

I mean I get it when its kind of a dead beat bar, but I guess my question is more for lively "happening" bars...ones with music and crowds and all that.
