Is it normal to give your opinion to someone you care for, who you think is making a huge mistake, even though you know that they will not take your advice? Or is it better to just hold your tongue and watch them go through it and afterwards wish you had said something?

Let them know what you think for the record, but support whichever decision they do make. Don't constantly make them doubt their own decision, help them work it if you can.
