Is it normal to get rheumatoid arthritis at 2 years of age?

I'm a 20 year old female and was wondering if there where any other cases (as such) of anyone getting Rheumatoid Arthritis at the age of 2 (and yes I know Juvenile comes before Rheumatoid Arthritis for the young). According to my Mum I said that I couldn't walk or anything, my Mum was also a nurse back in the day so she kinda knew what was going on. Ever since then my knees, ankles and hips were effected from the Arthritis. My right leg is the worst leg out of the 2.

Just wondering if there have been other cases or not...?

Is It Normal?

  • I was also diagnoses at a very young age (around 1 or 2) with juvenile RA. I used to wear braces on my legs to keep them straight at night or I couldnt walk the next day. I'm now 24 and my right leg is still an issue however I dont need braces to sleep anymore. And thankfully I don't remember the weekly trips to the hospital and physo I had multiple times a week when I was a child.

  • It could also be Lupus. You're pretty much born with Lupus but it doesn't kick in till later in your life. When it does kick in for women they're normally in their early 20s.

Lupus is an autoimmune disease as well. This means that your immune system is incredibly heightened. Have you ever gotten over a sickness faster than others? And when it attacks your joints it's normally your knees. A skin discoloration is also common.

    • I have heard of Lupus...I think. But I have been told by many people (Chiro's, Physio's, Doctor's n so on) that it is RA with me

  • I'm 21 years old and I have had RA my whole life. The problem is that it is so hard to diagnose, a lot of the time the blood test comes back negative even if the patient has RA. Also, the early stagegs of RA have many symptoms of other diagnosis so it is often overlooked. They originally thought I had lymphoma when I was very young but then never knew what was wrong with me. Later on in life I was diagnosed with RA. Anyways, RA sucks... every joint in the body is affected and the only way I have found to relieve the pain is with drugs. It depends on the day as to which joint(s) hurt for me.

    But to answer your question...
I'm sure you are aware but RA is an autoimmune disease, which means the immune system attacks the body. With RA, the immune system attacks the synovial fluid within the joints. So many people are born with RA, but many times isn't diagnosed until later in life. Good luck finding the perfect drug! lol

    • Yea I am aware of what RA does but I'm not sure if I was diagnosed with RA straight away or not, but I think my Mum kinda knew what was going on with me when I started having the symptoms.

Anyways, I haven't found that "perfect" drug as such but I have found that Celebrex helps me move my joints a bit better so ask your GP or whoever you go to, if it is right for you or not.

I actually did have a bad case half way through 2009 (I noticed it when my ankle started to click alot and had alot of swelling in my ankle and knee of my right leg in July/August) and it had only got back to 'normal' at the end of last year. What helped was a drug called Methotrexate. But I do not recommend it unless you desperately need it and ask your GP or whoever you go to. If you don't know what Mx (the drug) does, it kills off any unwanted fluids (or swelling).
