Is it normal to get ingrown toenails?

I'm a ballet dancer, and I always get ingrown toe nails. :(
Terrible. Once I get em... I pick at my toe until I get it out. Is it normal to get ingrown toe nails? Life suck with little hurting feet.

  • I've heard cutting 'V' shapes in the center of the toenail will help to prevent them from growing inwards... as the corners have room to grow in a different direction. It makes sense but I don't know if its true :)

    • No...old wive's tale. Quote: "One myth is that a V should be cut in the end of the ingrown nail. The reasoning of is that if one cuts a V in the nail, the edge of the nail will grow together as the nail grows out. This does not happen - the shape of the nail is determined by the growing area at the base of the toe and not by the end of the nail. A notch does not alleviate an ingrown toenail, and may do harm if cut too deeply"

  • I know a possible solution eventhough im a boy and i dont do ballet

I used to cut the corners of my toenails off, and when i did this, they grew in

So dont cut of the corners like with your fingersnails
And when its grown in and it hurts you can take a footbath with chlore in it

  • I don't know if this is common with ballet dancers, but I can tell you how to get rid of it. Let your nail ingrow and then go to a doctor, it's a 5 min procedure where the ingrown nail is removed and it's cut in a way that it won't ingrow again.
